The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was convicted of planning a military coup in last fall and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.
This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.
His son, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or observe everything from your phone there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of his "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.
The legal document highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
The former president is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, numerous his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brasília.
The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
