The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
