The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show draws close, one notices a demand for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
