Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical biological terror, but inside Together resides a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story commences when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple face the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.
