World Health Organization Raises Alert Over Critical Shortage of Weight-Loss Jabs

Less than a tenth of people eligible to benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy have access to them, states the World Health Organization as it issues its inaugural guidance on the therapies.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is urging more widespread and fairer availability to these injectable treatments.

According to projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The new guidance recognises that obesity is a chronic disease that can be addressed with comprehensive and ongoing support," stated the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, limited production capacity, and distribution challenges are key obstacles to widespread access to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing significant weight, says the body.

GLP-1 Therapy Shortage

Despite the current best projected scenario, the manufacturing of such drugs could only cover approximately 100 million people – under 10% of eligible patients, according to the WHO.

The guideline encourages nations and manufacturers to widen availability, by measures like licensing agreements.

Exclusive production rights on a key compound – the primary component of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in a number of countries in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Injections Function

The injections replicate a body's own hormone to delay gastric emptying, reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness so people reduce food intake.

People typically start to lose weight after several weeks of commencing the regular doses.

Studies suggests users may regain a significant portion after a year of discontinuing the drug, when their normal appetite come back.

Being overweight or obese increases your likelihood for contracting diseases, like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers.

Obesity affects individuals in countries worldwide and was responsible for 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, as per the WHO.
